Modernist

Definition

The Getty's Art & Architectural Theaurus (AAT) definition states: "Refers to the succession of 20th-century avant-garde art and architectural movements formed in a reaction to social modernity. Modernism was eclipsed by the Post-Modernism movement, which began in the 1970s".

Critique

The positioning of the term within AAT hierarchy is problematic. This term sites under AAT "modern European styles and movements" guide term even though art historical scholarship and curatorial practices acknowledge the modernist movement outside the European geographical sphere, e.g. American Modernism, East Asian Modernism, Black Modernism.
